WISDOM GODDESS

HISTORY

Athena was the Greek goddess of wisdom and the arts. The Romans called her Minerva. It was conceived of the union of Zeus and the goddess Métis. She was a virgin goddess, a beautiful warrior protector of her chosen heroes and also of her city Athens.

Athena was Zeus' favorite daughter, but when Métis became pregnant, Zeus swallowed his wife for fear that his daughter would be born more powerful than him and take away his throne, but for that to happen he convinced Métis to participate in a divine game, where each one was transformed into a different animal and the unwise prudent Métis ended up becoming a fly, and Zeus swallowed it. Métis went to Zeus's head. But with the passing of the years, Zeus felt a strong headache and asked Hephaestus to give him an ax, it was then that Athena, as an adult, jumped out of her father's brain, already in armor, helmet and shield.

Athena carries a spear in her hand, but that does not mean war but a strategy to win, she was also the inventor of the bridle, being the first to tame horses so that men could tame them. The city Athens was his favorite since it took its name and where services were also held in his honor.

Athena and Poseidon, her uncle, went on to dispute the patronage of an important city, for this they established a contest: whoever gave the best gift to the city would win the dispute. Poseidon hit with his trident and spewed seawater and also brought up a horse. Athena, in addition to taming the horse and making it a domestic animal, also gave as a gift an olive tree that produced food, oil and wood, it was then that she won and thus the city took its name, Athens.

Athena, considered the virgin goddess, remained like this throughout history, because she asked the gods not to fall in love, as she would become pregnant and would have to leave her life of wars and start living in a domestic life.

Athena was also known as Minerva for her casting vote when she judged Orestes together with the people of Athens. Orestes killed his mother to avenge his father's death. Athena cast Minerva's vote as she is known today, and declared Orestes innocent.

This great goddess was to be the new Queen of Olympus, but as a woman her father remained on the throne. But Athena was the goddess of wisdom, prudence, capacity for reflection, mental power, lover of beauty and perfection.
