MECA PROTECTIVE GODDESS

HISTORY

Uzza (in Arabic عزى), in pre- Islamic Arabia , was one of the three daughters of the supreme god . It is possible to find its name transliterated also as Ozza, or even with a preposition of the Arabic article al-. The word belongs to the same root as izza ("glory") and means "Mighty". It is also possible to find the meaning "the most beloved" for his name, according to Jairath Al-Saleh in his book "Fabulous cities, princes and geniuses in Arab mythology" (1990/28)

The sisters of this deity were the goddesses Al-Zuhara and Al-lat . In general, Uzza is associated with Al-Zuhara (goddess of love and beauty), however it is believed that she is more connected to Al-lat, since sometimes Uzza and Al-lat formed a trinity together with Manah , too known as Manat, or the god Hubal . Thus, it was common to worship Uzza and Al-lat together.

Uzza, Al-lat and Manat were the three protective goddesses of Mecca . In addition, Uzza was the main goddess of the Kuraishite tribe , she was also a deity of the Kenauah tribe and goddess of part of the tribe of Salim .

When they went to fight, the kuraischita clans took replicas of Al-lat and Uzza to give them courage and increase the warriors ' devotion .

Apparently it was a cruel goddess, who was only calmed by bloodshed , whether human or animal .

Uzza appears cited as a synonym for beauty in pre-Islamic poetry .

Its main sanctuary was in a place called Najla , located to the east on the way to the city of Taif . Also in the city of Mecca , Uzza had a temple , where it was adorned with precious stones and gifts of gold and silver were offered.

The cult of Uzza seems to come from Petra , where there was a version of the Nabataeans for this goddess of fertility present in various mythologies ( Venus , Aphrodite , Isis ). According to some authors, the Ghatafan tribe worshiped it under that name the acacia or the prickly plum of Egypt ( Prunus spinosa ).
